Ranking in Google isn’t just about doing the proper keyword research and creating great content. Often, specific pages need to be “massaged” onto Page 1 of the SERPs.
In order to know which pages and pieces of content need massaging, we need to know what keywords a specific page is ranking for and what position it’s currently ranking in.
This information is delivered through Google’s “Search Console” (formerly known as “Google Webmaster Tools”).
It’s also sometimes necessary to combine multiple pieces of content into one piece of content for better rankings, in which case we need to know where each piece of content is currently ranking in order to make the right moves with regards to combining that content with other content.
The bottom line is that a lot of valuable information can be extracted from Google Search Console that helps our team improve your site rankings. For this reason, we need to make sure you setup Google Search Console and then share access with us.
Here’s how do that, step-by-step…
Step 1: Add a Property in Google Search Console
Navigate to Google Search Console. Then click “add property.”
Enter your website address in the box that pops up and then click okay.
You’ll be taken to a screen that begins a verification process (Google needs to verify that you own the website at that address).
Click the “Alternate methods” tab and then choose “HTML tag.” This is the easiest way to verify your site if you’re not techy.
Copy the line of code in the white box (copy everything, including the brackets).
Do not click the “verify” button yet – you haven’t done anything. Leave this screen up and open a new tab in your browser. We need to add the verification code to your website…
Step 2: Add the Verification Snippet to Your Website
The verification code needs to be added to the <head> section of your website.
If you already know how to do that, go ahead and add the code snippet, then save your site, and go back to Google Search Console and click the “VERIFY” button.
If you don’t know how to add the verification code and don’t want to try, we can add it for you. Email the verification code to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you want to add it yourself, follow these steps (assuming your site is built on WordPress)…
- Install the AddFunc Head & Footer Code plugin.
- In WordPress, Navigate to Settings > Header & Footer Code
- Paste the snippet in the “Sitewide Head Code” box.
Once you’ve done that, save the settings.
Note: You may need to clear your site’s cache if you use caching tools before Google’s verification system will be able to see the code you added.
Step 3: Add Our Email Address as a User in Google Search Console
Adding our team as a user is simple. First, login to Google Search Console and click on your property. Then click the settings icon…
Next, click “ADD A NEW USER.”
Finally, enter our google address in the box: email@example.com (do not send email to this address. It’s only for Google apps integrations)…
Congrats! You’ve now setup Google Search Console and granted our team permission to view your search analytics. You’re all done!
